Why is Stansted priced so far above Bristol, when the mileage is almost the same?
Bristol and Stansted are near enough the same distance from Portsmouth — but every Stansted run has to get off Portsea Island first. There are only three roads on and off the island — the M275, the A3 London Road over its two bridges, and the A2030 Eastern Road — and they're always busy, especially at rush hour. From there the Stansted route sits on the M25 for a long stretch, one of the busiest orbital roads in the country, before a final push up the M11. The Bristol route clears the island the same way but then has a straighter run out on the A34 and M4. Same rough distance, very different roads — which is why we price on driving time and traffic, not just miles on a map.
