Why is Bristol dearer than Gatwick when it's nearer?
Because we price on driving time, not miles. Bristol looks closer on paper, but the road there is the A36 through Salisbury, Warminster and Bath — single carriageway for most of it, with no motorway to make up time. It takes as long as Gatwick and it's harder work for the car and the driver, so it's priced accordingly.

When Henry VIII dissolved Romsey Abbey in 1539 it should have been pulled down like the rest. Instead the townspeople were allowed to buy it in 1544 for £100 and use it as their parish church — which is why it's still standing today.
The abbey traces back to 907, when Edward the Elder — Alfred the Great's son — settled a community of nuns here under his daughter Elflaeda. It was refounded as a Benedictine nunnery by King Edgar in 967.
King John's House in the town centre actually dates from the mid-13th century — decades after John died in 1216. The hunting-lodge story was a local historian's guess back in 1927, and specialists have since dismissed it. Grand building, wrong name.
Broadlands, on the edge of town, was Lord Mountbatten's home. The Queen and Prince Philip spent the first days of their honeymoon there in 1947, and Charles and Diana did the same in 1981.
She grew up at Embley Park just outside Romsey, and when she died in 1910 she turned down a burial in Westminster Abbey. She lies at St Margaret's, East Wellow, under a modest stone marked with nothing but her initials and her dates.
Built in 1865 and closed in October 1982, Romsey's signal box was bought by a local trust for £10, moved, and restored to full working order — reopened on exactly the tenth anniversary of the day it shut. The levers still work.
